Local educational events:

OACCPP, an Ontario professional association of mental health professionals, has been providing introductory workshops about the provision of mental health services online and related legal issues at their annual conferences for years.

The School of Social Work at the University of Toronto offers the continuing education course Cybercounselling: Doing Therapy Online

Most common communication tools used in the country:

Widespread use of all communication tools.

Level of access for the general population:

A high rate of cell phone/text use.

Widespread and growing use of the internet.

Access to the internet is available for free at libraries and schools.

Level and examples of online mental health services/research/education/supervision:

Kids Help Phone offers free email support to kids.

A large Canadian Employee Assistance Program, WarrenShepell, offers e-counselling (short-term counselling online) in Canada and the US

There are a number of online therapists in Canada.

Many universities provide free online counselling to their students.

Some university websites offer answers to one-time questions via email and post the questions and answers on their website as a resource for others.

A number of universities use the internet for teaching and communicating.

Legal/regulatory issues:

Psychotherapists are not regulated and so fall outside of licensing regulations. Many psychotherapists join professional associations and abide by their ethics. Recently, the government passed a bill mandating the regulation of psychotherapists in Canada (or Ontario?) It is not clear yet what that will involve.

Doctors, psychiatrists, and psychologists are licensed.

OACCPP, a crediting professional association in Ontario, supports the provision of online mental health services.

In June 2006, the Canadian Psychological Association's Board of Directors approved in principle the Ethical Guidelines for Psychologists Providing Psychological Services via Electronic Media

The School of Social program at University of Toronto offers education about the provision of online mental health services.

Insurance/payment options:

There is liability insurance available for therapists providing online therapy (not for one-time advice) to clients who reside in Canada. They will also cover any law suits initiated in Canada regardless of where the person lives.

Kali Munro had a client in the US who was reimbursed by her insurance company for a portion of the fees she paid to for online therapy and f2f therapy. She argued that she could not get the services I provided locally.

Languages spoken:

English and French are Canada's official languages. Canada is very multi-cultural and multi-lingual.
