The ISMHO Mailing List

The ISMHO discussion list is a vibrant, international community of online therapists, consumers, business people, researchers, students, and others with an interest in online mental health.

The list is a place for members to consult, discuss, network, and share information, research, technology, resources, skills, and knowledge about online mental health issues. It is also a meeting place for members to get to know one another in an informal and friendly environment.

In the interest of maintaining a positive and constructive community, please take note of the following guidelines when participating:

  1. Always sign your messages with your real name in the body of the message, as some subscribers do not get all of the header information, and our names help us to get to know one another better. You might also want to include a signature with information such as your degree, affiliation, geographic location, and/or website, but if you do, please keep it to a reasonable length.

  2. Use the subject line that continues the thread in a discussion, or, if you create a new topic for discussion, create a new subject line that is clear and concise.

  3. If you are responding to a particular post within a digest (for those who receive mail via the digest option), please do not include the entire digest in your response, and be sure to change the subject head from "Digest" to the specific topic/subject head to which you are replying.

  4. Try to clearly format text you are quoting from a previous message, and try to quote only the parts of previous messages that you are replying to.

  5. We encourage you to share activities and projects you are involved in, particularly those related to online mental health – but please, not repeatedly. Do not post "mass mailing"-type advertisements to the list without a personalized statement as to why it may be relevant to the ISMHO community.

  6. Be sensitive to the cultural, geographic, and disciplinary diversity of the list.

  7. Be respectful of others' perspectives, even when you disagree with them and believe they are wrong.

  8. Do not share member passwords or any access information with nonmembers.

  9. All messages are protected by copyright laws. They cannot be used, copied, or forwarded without the prior consent of the author.

  10. Please avoid personal attacks, sarcasm, innuendo, or any other kind of derogatory or disrespectful language.

If the Executive Committee determines that a member has violated one of our guidelines, it will proceed in the following manner:

  • First time: reminder/warning
  • Second time: 30-day removal from the list
  • Third time: permanent removal from the list

The Executive Committee reserves the right in exceptional circumstances not to give a member multiple chances before removing them from the list. Please note that the goal here is not to remove people from the list, but to maintain a positive and constructive community.

We hope to move to ismho.org soon!

Off-List Contact

The Executive Committee takes responsibility for the list, but has no control over how members interact off-list (for example, what e-mails they send directly to others). Complaints about off-list contact may be directed to the authorities responsible for that venue. For example, offensive e-mail may be brought to the attention of the member's e-mail or Internet service provider, the member's professional organization or licensing board may be informed of unprofessional behavior, and stalking may be reported to the police.
